There are any number of ways that I can think of to make money from home online. Anything from selling your comic collection to online gambling. These might make you some quick cash (or not), but will they work? Are they sustainable?
If the answer to those two questions is anything but a definite “yes”, then keep your day job. Steady income is a must – and a 9-to-5 is a dependable income source while you work toward replacing it with something better.
That said, I’m going to share with you here some real ways to make money online. They do exist. And people do it every day. From freelance digital marketing to selling physical items to charging a fee to help someone learn or do something.
All you need is a laptop, a cell phone and an internet connection. If you’re reading this, you likely have those. So let’s look at some real ways to make money online.
1. Affiliate Marketing
Affiliate marketing is one of the most common and popular ways to make money from home. While its popularity varies across years, it remains a dependable way to make money from home online.
Much of that popularity comes from the fact that the vast majority of brands (companies selling things) use affiliate marketing.
This means you can be an affiliate for any number of companies, from Amazon to Legendary Marketer to ClickFunnels to Kartra to aWeber to Canva to PlaceIt.net.
The links immediately above and throughout this article are affiliate links for products I USE in my business.
When I recommend these products that I know and use, there’s no additional cost to the new customer and the business saves on advertising. In exchange, I get a small commission for referring new customers interested in these products. It’s a 3-sided win.
You can earn commissions (a percentage of a sale) by promoting sharing the products that you use daily in your own business.
Viewed short-term, commissions may seem limited, but that overlooks the bigger picture.
You can be an affiliate for multiple products and promote several affiliate links with a single video or blog post. Also, some product even pay recurring commissions.
Affiliate marketing can be a means of earning a living by promoting the products of another business. It can also be a means of funding your own product development. With a product of your own, you can in turn offer your own Affiliate Program.
For those just getting started, content marketing may be your best bet when it comes to making money online with affiliate marketing.
If you start a blog that provides content people are already searching for and which includes affiliate links, you now have an asset that you own.
If an affiliate program ends or you favor another product, you can switch out your affiliate links and maintain your flow of income.

2. Start a YouTube Channel
A serious amount of money is being made on YouTube. There’s no reason you can’t have a slice of the pie. All you need is a consistent flow of ideas for content.
Successful YouTubers find a way to create content that gets “in front of” what people are looking for. Then they stay there by providing an engaging blend of education and entertainment for their chosen audience or passion.
Tools like TubeBuddy can help you find high-performing video topics and make perfect titles and tags so you can rank higher in search results.
A catchy or descriptive headline, an eye-catching thumbnail, and keywords optimized for YouTube search go a long way to getting viewers and starting to make money.
I started the YouTube channel below using TubeBuddy tools and free video editing tools like InVideo (beginner) and DaVinci Resolve (intermediate).
Currently, once you have 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 watch hours within the last 12 months, you can apply for the YouTube Partner Program and monetize your channel.

3. Start a Blog
Blogging is a tried and true method for making money online.
If you have a talent for writing or simply a passion for a specific thing or idea, you can start a blog focused on that topic and write about the many subtopics associated with the main idea.
You can quickly get started on a social blogging platform like Medium or Blogger. Even Quora allows you to create spaces dedicated to your own topics of interest.
Alternatively, you can self-host a blog on your own website. All you need is a domain (web address) from a company like Bluehost or HostGator. Then you can use a content management system like WordPress to build out your site and Blog.
You’ll want to start your blog with a narrow focus on a specific keyword (your main idea) then build out related content using related keywords.
A good keyword research tool like KWFinder can save you lots of time by providing related keywords with extremely useful data like search volume, keyword difficulty, and competition. Knowing these things gives you a distinct advantage over those who don’t.
